Define your audience, set SMART goals, and focus your channels for consistent results

Marketing your business doesn’t have to mean doing everything everywhere at once. Ann Lettis breaks the process down into three practical steps, starting with knowing exactly who you’re talking to. Define your audience by getting clear on who your ideal client or customer is: what they need, what problems they’re trying to solve and where they actually spend their time, whether that’s a specific social platform, industry event or community group.

Once you know your audience, the next step is setting SMART goals: specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-based. Vague intentions like “get more clients” don’t give you anything to work toward or measure. SMART goals do and, just as important, they’re not a one-and-done exercise. Revisit and reevaluate your goals periodically to check your progress and make small adjustments as needed, rather than waiting until you’re way off track to course-correct.

Finally, choose a few channels rather than trying to be everywhere. Spreading your time and budget across too many platforms often means doing all of them poorly. Instead, focus on quality and consistency on just one or two channels where your audience already is. That consistency builds trust and recognition far faster than a scattered presence ever will.
