How a Few Well-Chosen Words Can Define a Brand

This week’s Marketing Minute, presented by Dale Sparks, revisited a familiar topic, slogans, with a fresh twist by using AI tools (with inspiration from fellow member Rich Cavallaro) to generate brand-defining lines for several NRG businesses. Dale opened by reminding the group what makes a slogan work: clarity, memorability, and emotional resonance. A great slogan does three things: it defines identity, builds recognition, and creates connection, acting as a shortcut that communicates a brand’s value faster than any paragraph could.

To bring the concept to life, Dale shared real local slogans and challenged the group to guess the business behind each one, from Upstate Comfort Systems’ “Quality and integrity, you can trust” to Westwood Studios’ “We make films about life.” The exercise showed just how much personality and positioning can be packed into a single line.

Then came the twist: Dale ran several member businesses without a clear slogan through AI, comparing the AI’s top picks against his own personal favorites. Verizon Wireless, Command Computing, Hudson Life Coaching, and even Mighty Spark Design all got the AI treatment, with results ranging from punchy and direct (“It’s finally your turn”) to warm and values-driven (“Where bold ideas meet inclusive design”). The takeaway: AI can be a great brainstorming partner, but it still takes a human ear to pick the line that truly fits.
