Breaking down the networking philosophy that keeps NRG’s referral engine running
This week’s Marketing Minute, presented by Rick, went back to basics with a concept every NRG member should have tattooed on their brain: Giver’s Gain. He reminded us that this isn’t just a nice sentiment, it’s the operating principle behind how referral-based networking actually works. Give first, and the referrals will follow. It’s especially important for newer members to hear this early, before they fall into the trap of showing up, staying quiet, and wondering why the leads aren’t rolling in.
The core idea is simple but easy to forget in the day-to-day hustle: if you want to receive referrals, you have to be the one generating them for others first. Rick was direct about the most common troubleshooting question new members ask: “why am I not getting referrals?” and the honest answer is almost always the same. It’s not the group, it’s not the industry, it’s not luck. It’s a giving problem. Members who actively look for ways to send business to others in the room are the ones who see referrals come back around, sometimes from directions they never expected.
To back up his point, Rick shared a video set to lyrics adapted from Johnny Cash’s “Ring of Fire,” reworked into a catchy, sing-along breakdown of the Giver’s Gain philosophy (a concept popularized by BNI founder Dr. Ivan Misner). Swapping the “ring of fire” for “aboard that giving train,” the parody boils the whole mindset down to one image: everyone climbing aboard together, riding toward a shared payoff. It’s a fun, memorable spin on a classic tune, but the takeaway is serious — generosity isn’t a side effect of a good networking group, it’s the fuel that makes the whole thing run.
