A Simple, Low-Pressure Way to Start Real Conversations
Cold calling is one of the least favorite activities in sales — and for good reason. Live connect rates for B2B calls typically fall between 2% and 12%, with 80–90% of calls going straight to voicemail or getting filtered as spam.
But what if your best icebreaker was already in your pocket?
This week’s Marketing Minute challenged members to use their smartphone as a low-pressure way to start conversations with strangers. The approach is simple: either ask someone to take a photo of you (and a friend or spouse), or offer to take a photo of a group you see gathered nearby. That small, helpful gesture naturally opens the door to a brief exchange — “Oh, I hope that turned out okay!” — and suddenly you’re having a real conversation with someone new.
As a bonus, this trick works especially well as a bridge between generations. Hand a younger person your phone and they’ll often turn it into a full-on photo session — which gives you even more to connect over.
This week’s challenge
Find one moment to either ask for a photo or offer to take one. It’s a simple, genuine way to break the ice and start building a connection.
